What is going on with CNN’s reporting these days?? John Edwards just endorses Barack Obama for President this evening and CNN runs the lead story in their politics section about Obama apologizing for calling a female reporter sweetie. They included the fact that he called her and apologized but I have to ask how is this news. Are they kidding?

Thanks for your blog. However, I think it is appropriate to lead with the story. Obama’s comment, was not only inappropriate, it was blatantly sexist and patronizing. I am left to wonder, will he treat women that way if in office?
Unlike you, I did not see this story on CNN today or any other tv station for that matter. I learned about it through the internet. All media should be addressing this issue. Why is television media eager to address issues of racism but not sexism? I am a democrat and was divided on who to vote for until now–I absolutely cannot vote for any candidate who insensitively uses an historically derogatory name when addressing a professional person in a business setting, in any instance. What if Obama used “sweetie” to address a gay person or “boy” to address an African American person? Such nomenclature just isn’t appropriate in a professional context and a presidential candidate promising “change” ought to know better. But apparently, he does not.

Thanks Pilar for your comment. I respect your concern with someone who uses the term “sweetie” towards another without permission. On the other side of the coin, as a male I can tell you that I have been called sweetie and honey from strangers more times then I can remember. I always thought it was forward and usually inappropriate. Apparently the reporter was more annoyed with not getting her question answered then being called “sweetie”. Her reaction seemed to be more lighthearted then angry. Her response, aired on her local channel: “This sweetie never did get an answer to the question”.

Hmmm … I have also been called “honey” as well as “sweetie” many many times. I don’t recoil from it. Get over all this pretentiousness and let’s just get on with being the best we can be. Go Obama! Edwards’ story should have been number one – totally!
